New Years Marketing Plan?

So have you considered your New Years Marketing Plan yet?

I hope so! Don't pay any attention to the crap you are seeing on the TV and in the News. Hard economics is the best time to do your marketing. Business who market aggressively in hard time do well. Those who stop always die.

Now divide your marketing up into two different type. HARD and SOFT. Now I am talking about martial arts school operations here, but this can apply to any business.

Hard activities are those things like TV and Print Ads, radio ads etc. Look at your stats and see what has been working for you. Your website is also hard marketing. Hard marketing is often expensive, so you want to keep track of what works and what does not. Now is not the time to waste money.

Soft marketing activities are things like Buddy Day, Movie nights, Belt Graduations etc, etc, etc. You can probable think of dozens of activities like these. Write them all down. Soft activities are often time inexpensive as well. Great for this economy.

What do soft activities do? When working with hard they result in enrollments. A great soft activity is meeting new people. There is a Tim Horton's right next to my school. I go in several times a day and see if I can meet someone new. Often I will be in uniform during class hours. Soft marketing can be done all day long.

One final note, STUDENT SERVICES.....yep, here I go again talking about student service. But there is no more important topic. Stephen Oliver, a great martial arts business man, can show you how to enroll 100 students in a month. But if they all quit, you lose!

Avoiding Economic Disaster

If you look at the newspaper or watch CNN you will hear all about the wows of various big businesses as they struggle to survive. Are you shocked at the current problems? I've been expecting it for years.

First what goes up must come down and vica versa. Things will improve. But more importantly how do you keep your business from becoming one of these statistics.

Number 1 - Keep Statistics!

Many martial arts school owners are white belts when it comes to business. They do things because tradition states you follow in your instructors footsteps. Is he bankrupt?

Keep statistics, things like the number of info call vs enrollments. What percentage is your rent vs your gross income? What percentage is your payroll? Remember you are in business to make a net profit.

These big companies and financial institutions are failing because they are mis-managed, or in better terms run by MORONS.

Great Student Service Part 1









How do you keep students in a bad economy? Due to economic times people are cutting back on unnecessary items. With this in mind, you must make sure that the parents of you students view your school as a necessary item. How do you do this? With OUTSTANDING Student Services!

Are you going to lose some students? Yes, some people will just not have the money to pay you. That is OK, you need to marketing to the ones who can pay, and take care of the ones you have!

So lesson number 1 in students service (and retention for that matter), lets talk about belt testing!

Belt testing or grading is one of the most important things in your students life as a martial artist. Is your belt testing a positive, recharging experience for the student? Or is it something they fear and find as a negative experience. Belt testing for me when I started was anything but positive!

Here are some guidelines to help you improve your Belt testing experience for the student.

  1. NO TEST FEES! This is so very important I cannot over state it. Whatever you are charging for classes do not charge for testing. Parents feel like they are being nickle and dimed to death, or worse being ripped off!
  2. Test each student, every three months. This means you have a monthly testing or graduation. Even if it is for 1 person.
  3. They get a new belt each testing. Do away with stripes for rank! We have 14 belts in our system to Black Belt. The money you pay for the belt is worth the motivation of the student!
  4. Black Belt in 4 years. There first Black Belt needs to be 4 years from the start. Gifted students are no exception.
  5. Tips on belts. You need to tip each student, each month to show progress! Assign a tip week, the week before the belt testing or graduation! This will help keep attendance high!
  6. Send out a Testing Package for each student who tests. This is similar to an invitation to an event. This helps make the student know they are not just a number. Include invitations they can give friends to come and watch.
  7. Give a certificate for each belt colour change. Ours are printed on the school laser and the students love them!
  8. This is also a great time to promote events, honour any student or parent that you feel should be hononed (Jimmy won the speech contest etc)
  9. Have your Demo Team perform! (Showcase!!!)
  10. Start on time and end on time!!!! (try to do it all in 1 hours on Saturday morning if you can)

Will my business survive? Bad Economy 101





I watch the statistics for this website each and every morning at the start of my day. It has been fascinating that the traffic here slows down, the worse the economy seems to get. Got figure! You would think that smart marketing would become more and more important as the problems get worse.

It has been several weeks since my last article, why? My school has been very busy! November has been an excellent month for us for enrollments, despite the bad news everywhere.So why are we growing when so many other schools are going out of business or just surviving? two reasons, #1 is student services. We are always striving to make the student experience better and better. Then when Mom and Dad look to eliminate unnecessary things from the budget, we are not one of them! But I will do specific student service articles later.

The second reason, how many students do you actually need to do well?

I live in an auto town. The unemployment rate is up 30% and 2 plants are closing in the next little while. There are approximately 200,000 people in this town, not to mention the surrounding area. There are also about 20 commercial martial art schools.

The area (5 square miles) that my school is in has about 30,000 or more people in it. How many people out of this are going to be affected by the current situation? Let's face it there are a lot of people still out there with lots of money! But, lets put this figure high at 50%. That leaves me 15,000 unaffected.

How many of those are prospects (age etc). Ok how about 5000? This will exclude older people, people with no children etc. Again I am giving a high figure!

Now, look at your current situation, would another 100 students change your life? With the above figure I would need .02% to move to enroll 100 new students. See my point?

So, stop worrying and bitching about the economy, and start doing smart marketing. Start with your current flock of students. You will be amazed at what you see happening!

The server on our karate-marketing.com site was hacked last night. It's been a long time since I had someone do this. Last time was my school website, and that was about 4 years ago. It does not look like the databases were compromised, just a redirect on the sites main page.

Copywriting Tips 1






So, it's time to talk about Copywriting. In this first installment we will go over some of the things that you need to be thinking about writing great copy, that will help you sell your program.

As Dan Kennedy will tell you. The key to copy is;

  • Problem
  • Agitate
  • Solve

Problem: to get a hold of the prospect attention tell them about a problem they have. I will use things such as "self esteem, your child's focus, etc

Agitate: Stur the problem up in the mind of your prospect. An example of low self esteem makes a child an easy target for pier pressure, and bullying!

Solve: Tell the prospect how your program will solve their problems.

This is a simple formula, study it, memorize it and use it!

Retention - How important is it?

What is retention and how important is it? Retention is simply, how many students as a percentage are quitting each and every month. An example is if you have 100 students in your school and 5% quit this month, you know have 95 students. If your school has 300 students and 5% quit, you now have 285 students.

These number can be very sobering! The trick is of course to enrol more students than you have quit! So lets look at this again.

Example 1

School A has 100 students with a 5% quit rate, they need to enroll 5 new students each month just to keep even. To grow they need to either enrol more students, or drop their quit rate!

Example 2

School B has 300 students with a 5% quit rate, they need to enrol 15 new students each month to break even! WOW they is an even more difficult task. If they don't enroll 15 new students they are losing ground. This school must look at reducing the number of students quitting as well as getting new students.

From these example you can see how important retention is! 5% is also well below the average for most martial art schools! If either school can get the quit rate down to 3% they make the job of growth far easier!

Retaining Adult Students

The biggest challenge for any martial art school owner is retaining students. But today I am going to talk about the retention of adult students. How do you run your school? Are you the person who opens and closes each night? Do you teach every class? Do you still have a full time job other than running a martial art school? Is this the way that you want it to be?

Now I run 3 locations, (one being franchised). It is obvious that this would be almost impossible to do alone. But to do this effectively I need well taught Black Belt adult students! This was not always an easy task!

How do you motive adults to keep training, become Black Belts and want to teach classes? You need an amazing and continuously growing curriculum! Without it you are dead!

The system that I originally started in was a Korean Hapkido/Tae Kwon Do mix like many of you did. At Black Belt there was simply only new patterns to learn. Maybe a few self defense techniques that we had realy already done. So why was I still there? Loyalty! I trained under my first instructor for 16 years. I stayed because we had become good friends, and I believed in loyality.

Do you think that is the best way to keep students? I don't either. You need a great curiculum, one that keeps them coming back night after night, wanting to learn more. The good news is, Kyusho Jitsu is just what you are looking for!

Kyusho Jitsu is a non-intrusive art, that once you begin to learn you can start to add to your existing root art. It will make the techniques you do much more effective, it will teach you how to break down your kata to make it more enjoyable to teach, as well as learn!

The Secret to Retaining Students

Dear School Owners & Instructors,
